    Biomedical Signal Processing and Analysis

    Our group focuses on the advanced digital signal processing technology and nonlinear methods for analysis of biomedical signals generated from the complex physiological mechanics. The related research topics cover artifact removal, adaptive filtering, spatial-temporal analysis, spectral analysis, time-frequency representation, fractal analysis, signal decomposition, feature extraction, and signal classification.

    VAG signal analysis

    Analysis of time-frequency distribution and statistical features of knee joint vibroarthrographic (VAG) signals

    Articular degeneration of injured knees such as ostearthritis is known to result from damage to the stabilizing ligaments of the knee, or to the shock-absorbing fibrocartilage pads. Early detection of knee joint pathology can help clinicians apply appropriate therapeutical or surgical procedures to control the degenerative process. Computer-aided analysis of knee joint vibroarthrographic (VAG) signals could provide quantitative indices for noninvasive diagnosis of cartilage pathology. The project focuses on analysis of VAG signals in the time-frequency domain and statistical representations of normal and abnormal VAG signals.

    Gait analysis

    Gait rhythm time series analysis in neurological diseases

    Degeneration of motor neurons would affect the motor function and result in balanced impairment or characteristic changes in gait and mobility. The research project focuses on the statistical analysis of gait rhythm time series in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, and Huntington's disease.

    Artifact removal

    Artifact removal in nonlinear and nonstationary physiological signals

    In clinical practice, biomedical signals recorded by placing electrodes on the subject's body, is susceptible to several different types of artifacts, such as baseline wander, power-line interference, the physiological signals induced by induced by other organs, and random noise. The project focuses on cancellation of dominant artifacts in biomedical signals and extraction of features for diagnostic analysis.

    Pattern Analysis and Classification

    Our group develops novel machine learning techniques for pattern representation and hybrid intelligent systems for computer-aided medical diagnosis.

    Pattern classification

    Design of Multiple Classifier Systems for Medical Diagnosis

    A multiple classifier system is able to utilize the knowledge generated by its well-devised component classifiers to make a consensus diagnosis decision, which is supposed to be superior to the one attained by a single classifier. The design of a multiple classifier system can be implemented by combing a group of classifiers and then by training with the ensemble learning algorithms (generative strategies) or using the linear or nonlinear fusion methods (nongenerative strategies). The project focuses on developing nonlinear fusion methods to combine multiple classifiers in order to solve the diagnostic problems in the field of biomedicine.
